Civilization: Is the West History?

Postby Nick1984 on Sun Apr 03, 2011 8:04 pm

Has anyone been watching Civilization: Is the West History lately? Wash episode basically covers one of 6 'killer apps' that has lead to the modern age in America and Europe, and compares them to the rest of the world which lacked these...

1. Competition (capitalism, war)
2. Science (as opposed to religion)
3. Democracy (factions)
4. Medicine
5. Consumerism (greed)
6. Work ethic

Without these, we'd be living third world life styles. The reason Asia and South America are now modernising and catching up is that they've 'downloaded' (copied) these killer apps.

Tonight's episode (5) was on consumerism, and compared Western capitalism to communism. Interestingly points out that China has recently copied this and are booming, while Turkey could be heading backwards if some people have their way.

we Americans cant expect to stay number 1 forever.. the Romans had their day, the Arabs were top dogs of science & economy in teh Middle ages, the Dutch were the greatest sea trading power once, the Brits ruled 1/3 of the world in the 19th century..

The west will not die out, won't be "history" - we'll just move intot he back ground a bit & give new powers their turn to shine.

If anyone has read my thread "Will China Become A Superpower?", geopolitics dictates that The United States of America will be a superpower for at least the majority of this century, and North America will be the center of gravity for a while.

I don't understand why everyone here thinks that the United States will fall. The timeline predicts it, and everyone on this forum predict it. The United States has the most powerful military in the world, is the largest epicenter of science, and has been to the Moon. Whoever thinks that China, where diseases ravage the population, is going to be a superpower, is mentally insane.

Calling somebody insane renders your argument invalid. Anyway, insanity means somebody tries the same thing over and over expecting a new result every time. That has nothing to do with predicting the next superpower, something new and fresh. Diseases ravage the population here as well. China is rising, and i don't get the fear of it. I say it is about time.

I mean.. really "

C'mon.. what is that.

Considering China's rapid modernization, and development of science and technology, I can't see why they'd be any more prone to disease in the future than any developed country of today.

It's the fact that they're emulating what made Western powers successful in the 19th and 20th centuries is why many see them as a new superpower.

China is an overpopulated, communist country. On top of that, it's a second world country. It isn't gonna be a world power.

Another point that kind of offends me is that the timeline seems to have some sort of problem with America. Everything on there about America is negative in some way.

North Korea is a communist country, the Soviet Union was a communist country, post-80s China was a communist country.

Modern China isn't communist, despite the government being named the CCP it no longer practices communism/Marxism.

North Korea is a communist country, and where has it gone so far? The Soviet Union was a communist country, and it collapsed, bringing down the Iron Curtain with it. And China will only remain as economically powerful as it is as long as America remains a superpower. China is too dependent on the West to hold its own as a superpower. And it does not control all of the world's oceans, nor exports, nor economies, nor does it export ideas, creativity, science, or art as the West does. Nor does it even have access to the oceans as America does, being able to maneuver and attack foreign countries without being attacked. Nor does it have the ability to shoot missiles thousands of miles away to a specific target as America does.

And why would the West be history? The U.S. shows no signs of militarily weakening, and this recession is only temporary; they have occurred many times before, and America is still the most powerful country in the world. America just makes a big deal out pf everything because it is an adolescent country, and behaves much like a hysterical teenager: when it feels it is threatened, it overcompensates militarily, and that is in fact another key to its success. America is the wealthiest country in the world, and its GDP is #1. China is #2. if America suddenly became #180 for no reason at all, as most of you are positive will happen, China would become #181. As George Friedman said, "if America catches a cold, China catches pneumonia."

At the end of the day, America will retain its superpower status, and China will not become a superpower.

Last episode on Channel 4 8pm tonight.

All the other episodes looked at the key apps that lead us to dominate.

Tonight's seems to be about how we're losing faith in our culture and how other countries will overtake us by copying what made us successful in the first place.
