Site problems :-(

Postby wjfox2009 on Fri Dec 24, 2010 7:56 am

Half the site is currently down, due to the ineptness of my webhost.

My site got featured on Reddit and the webhost couldn't handle it.

Here's the email I received from them, and my reply.

Hello William,

It has come to our attention that your website was causing problems and this affected other customers on the same web server. Please note that you will need to decrease the image files you have embedded per web page; as the connection jammed the server. To prevent further issues, we have disabled the following web files:

2000-2009.htm
2010-2019.htm
2020-2029.htm
2030-2039.htm
2040-2049.htm
2050-2059.htm
2060-2069.htm
2070-2079.htm
2080-2089.htm
2090-2099.htm
21stcentury.htm

Please resolve the issue as soon as possible.

Thank you.

Regards,

Philip

The message I sent them:

Is this some kind of joke? I paid for Unlimited Hosting - I expect you to provide this. I see I've had a spike in traffic today, but nothing your servers shouldn't be able to handle. If this is a problem, then I guess I'll have to change webhost. Thanks for losing me a fortune in AdSense revenues today, btw - I can't tell you how much I appreciate that. And half of my website is now totally dead. Brilliant. Thanks again!

I'm gonna have to change webhosts. :( Can anyone recommend a decent one? Preferably one that can handle 100,000+ unique views per day.

Yes, I use to host my website. They have free tech support and a ton of free applications already installed into their SQL server. All you have to do is click a button "install" and you're done. You can also purchase a private web server from them as well. I use their "shared web-hosting" services.

I use dreamhost. Very reliable and has tons of customisability, tools, etc, to make everything a breeze. Unlimited storage, unlimited bandwidth. Comes to around £50-60 a year I think.

I think the forums are hosted different than the main site.

Yes. They are completely separate. I may combine them eventually.

Use phpBB if you do, it's nice and easy to keep everything backed up in the event of a crash or data loss :) Plus of course the bonus of complete customisability!
